In the world of guitar, people discuss for hours about pedals, amps, plugins, analog and digital. Then you listen to a demo on YouTube, compressed, processed, played from a smartphone… and you decide which sounds better.


Why when you listen to a pedal on YouTube… you're listening to the fingers, not the pedal

In the guitar world, there is a persistent belief:

“This pedal sounds better than that one”
“This amp is warmer”
“This digital plugin lacks dynamics”

Then you open YouTube, listen to a demo recorded with a smartphone, compressed by a lossy codec, played back from a phone…

…and you decide you understand everything about the sound.

Let's clear things up a bit, with a technical approach.

Not from a forum.

From a laboratory.

1. When you listen to a demo, you are NOT listening to the pedal

When you hear an online demo, the actual chain is this:

Guitar → Pedal → Amplifier → Microphone → Preamp → Converter → DAW → Plugin → Export → Codec → Upload → Streaming → Codec → Smartphone → Speaker → Ear

In engineering terms, the pedal is just one of many stages of signal processing.

And often not even the most important one.

Each step introduces:

  • frequency filtering
  • dynamic compression
  • harmonic distortion
  • bandwidth limitation
  • phase loss
  • transient loss

When you listen to the final result, you are listening to the entire system, not the single component.

2. The biggest factor of all: the touch

Here comes the part many don't want to hear.

Two different guitarists, with the same rig, will NEVER sound the same.

Reason?

Signal physics.

The string doesn't always vibrate the same way.

It depends on:

  • attack angle
  • pick speed
  • position on the string
  • left hand pressure
  • micro-rhythmic timing
  • dynamic control

These variables change:

  • harmonic spectrum
  • signal amplitude
  • sound envelope
  • transient content

And all this reaches the pedal BEFORE the pedal.

The pedal reacts to the signal it receives.

If the signal is different, the sound is different.

Always.

3. The “velvet paw”

Those who have been playing for a long time know this.

There are guitarists who seem to play softly…

but the sound is huge.

They don't hit the strings hard.

They don't force it.

They don't shout.

They have the velvet paw.

Technically it means:

  • dynamic control
  • soft but decisive attack
  • clean transient
  • stable harmonic distribution
  • optimal signal-to-noise ratio

A pedal, an amp, or a plugin reacts much better to a controlled signal.

For this reason:

A great guitarist sounds good even with a mediocre rig.

A beginner sounds bad even with a €5000 rig.

It's not philosophy.

It's electronics + physics + psychoacoustics.

4. Recording ≠ real sound

Another common mistake.

A recorded demo is NOT the real sound of the amp.

A recording introduces:

  • microphone placement (which changes everything)
  • microphone position
  • environment
  • preamplifier
  • AD/DA conversion
  • compression
  • mastering
  • streaming codec

In psychoacoustics, it's called:

Signal chain coloration

Each stage colors the signal.

So when you say:

This pedal sounds better

You're actually saying:

I like this recording better

Which is very different.

5. Analog vs digital: often you're judging the video, not the sound

Many say:

  • digital is cold
  • analog is warm
  • this plugin is fake
  • this pedal is real

Then the test is listened to:

  • on YouTube
  • with AAC codec
  • on a phone
  • with 1 cm speakers

From a scientific point of view, it's an almost paradoxical situation.

You're looking for subtle differences in harmonic saturation

in a system that is destroying 90% of the information.

It's like judging a fine wine…

after drinking it from a plastic cup.

6. The right piece for the right sound

Last point, often ignored.

A sound is not beautiful in absolute terms.

It's beautiful in context.

An overdrive that seems mediocre alone

can be perfect in a mix.

A huge sound in solo

can be unusable in a band.

In sound engineering, it's called:

Context-dependent perception

The brain evaluates sound in relation to context.

For this reason, in demos, the most important factor is:

  • who plays
  • what they play
  • how they play it

Not the pedal.

7. Conclusion

Pedals are important.

Amps are important.

Plugins are important.

But the first stage of the chain is always the same:

The hands.

And if those are velvet paw,

the rest of the chain works better.

If they don't have it,

you can buy whatever you want.

You will never hear it.
